Near Iași, archaeologists dug up the largest known Cucuteni pottery kiln: 7.5 square metres of firing floor, 12 cubic metres, 6,000 years old
A magnetic survey in 2024 revealed a settlement of nearly 8 hectares at Ursoaia, north-eastern Romania, with some 60 burnt houses and at least eight kilns. Excavation in 2025 uncovered one of them. Known Cucuteni kilns have firing floors of 2 to 4 square metres; the largest until now had 4.8. This one has about 7.5. Published in Antiquity, open access, by an all-Romanian team.
The Cucuteni–Trypillia culture is the one that keeps getting inflated on the Romanian internet into "the oldest civilisation in Europe". This paper does the opposite. It is ten pages long, reports one survey, one excavation, four radiocarbon dates and one comparison, and never uses the word "record". It uses "benchmark".
What was found
In 2024 a magnetic survey at Ursoaia, in Iași county, mapped a settlement of almost 8 hectares enclosed by a ditch, with about 60 burnt houses in clusters, many pits and at least eight kilns. One magnetic anomaly of up to 22 nanotesla, right against the ditch, was excavated in 2025.
It turned out to be a two-chamber, vertical-draught kiln, very well preserved. The buried firing chamber measures about 3.10 by 2.40 metres and supports a working floor of more than 7 square metres. It has four longitudinal fire channels separated by three massive supports cut from the sterile clay and coated with a clay layer. Above them sat a grate of modular, removable clay slabs, each about 0.60 by 0.35 by 0.08 metres. The total height is estimated, cautiously, at 2.2 to 2.5 metres, which gives a firing chamber of roughly 12 cubic metres.
How old
Four samples of animal bone associated with the kiln were radiocarbon-dated at the Poznań laboratory. Calibrated, they fall between 3963 and 3651 BC, that is the second half of the 40th century and the 39th century BC. This matches the decorated pottery on the site (Cucuteni B1 / Trypillia BII–CI) and published dates for that phase. The kiln is slightly younger than the kilns at Maidanetske and Stolniceni I, and older than those at Talianki and Dobrovody, all in Ukraine and Moldova.
Why "largest"
Published Cucuteni kilns have working floors of 2 to 4 square metres (Maidanetske, Talianki, Nebelivka). The largest until now, Stolniceni I, has 4.6 to 4.8. Ursoaia, at about 7.5, is the largest securely documented kiln of this type in the whole Cucuteni–Trypillia area.
On a Eurasian scale, of 238 Chalcolithic kilns from South-West Asia (6th–5th millennia BC) catalogued by Padovani in 2023, the average is 1.5 to 1.8 square metres and only four exceed 7: two at Tell Abada (about 19.6 each), Tell Ziyada (about 8) and Yunus (7.1).
What the authors refuse to say
The temperatures are inferred, not measured. The authors write explicitly that the electron-microscope observations (SEM–EDX) are "qualitative indicators of repeated high-temperature firing cycles, not precise temperature measurements". The fully oxidised, unvitrified slabs are "compatible" with 800–900 °C; incipient vitrification on fragments of the vault "may reflect" local peaks of 950–1100 °C, with the caveat that raw material, firing duration and local atmosphere can shift the estimates.
"Craft specialisation" is an interpretation, and they say so. The kiln "indicates a level of production that probably exceeded domestic needs", and several kilns in a small settlement "underline this possible shift", but "the definitive characterisation of a community-level workshop remains a subject for future research". Anyone who reads "a pottery factory 6,000 years ago" is reading more than the paper says.
Height and volume are estimates. The vault collapsed. The 2.2–2.5 metres and the 12 cubic metres come from the preserved structure, the vault fragments and the way a vertical draught works. The authors use the word "cautious". The working floor of over 7 square metres, by contrast, is measured directly on the preserved chamber.

What the study does not say
- Temperatures (800–900 °C, peaks of 950–1100 °C) are qualitative estimates from microscopy, not measurements; the authors say so explicitly.
- Craft specialisation is an interpretation left open by the authors; a 'community workshop' is not established.
- Height (2.2–2.5 m) and volume (about 12 m³) are reconstructed from a collapsed vault; only the floor area is measured directly.
- Seven other kilns seen in the magnetic survey have not been excavated yet.
